The north.
The main economy in the Industrial North was cotton.
In 1761 the British Society of Arts were in demand for cotton. They wanted a machine that would spin six threads of wool with only one person working it. There was a cash reward for who ever could do it.

Most people lived and worked on farms, often making their own clothing and other basic nessities.
In towns, A few skilled artisans-such as black smiths and shoe makers-crated small numbers of manufactured goods by hand.

Women workers
Women workers faced special challenges. They eared less money than men and most union leaders would not allow women to join. In 1824 the first women strike occurred in 1833 a union for female factory workers formed.

How the railroads and canals CONSTRUCTED the northern industry.
From 1840 to 1860 rapid growth became the dominant characteristic of the northern economy. The growth was largely due to new methods of farming, inventions, and the expanding transportation system.
Industry in the north grew rapidly the use of steam power instead of water power to run factories allowed factory owners to build almost anywhere, instead of only near rivers.
It changed the way people lived and worked. It was a period of rapid improvement in the speed, ease, and cost of transportation.
The steamboat was a huge important change in travel. Steamboats cut the travel time between Pittsburgh and New Orleans from an average of five weeks to only two weeks. Steamboats also made it easier for eastern companies to ship their goods to western buyers.
What the steamboat did for water travel, the train did for land travel.
People had to be a lot smarter about creating railroads. Trains had to run up and down steep mountains around tight curves, and over dangerous rivers.
